Liz and I saw Joyce Tenneson talk about her work today at CCNE. Tenneson talked a bit about finding a signature style and voice as artists. She said that the only artists that do well in the long run are those that do find their signature style or voice. She also emphasized knowing art history, photo history as well as knowledge of graphic design. She didn't sugar-coat what it takes to be at her level as a photographer - even said that none of her interns or assistants would ever make it like she has because they don't work as hard as she does. It's raining still. The water is high in the Merrimack. My folks are over for the night. J's here, too. And I need to finish my packet. Is it possible that the semester is half over already?

She's doing well in a supportive school. I'm on page 6 of packet #3. I see her tomorrow and I will finish my writing on time. It surprises me how easy the words come sometimes. I'm also surprised at what words come out - some that I have never used before, but that flow naturally into what I am saying.

σκατά λουλούδι

Visited David's yiayia today. Dave came up with post-watermark name for my "Tulips" image - σκατά λουλούδι - translated it means "sh*t flower".

This was meant to happen. I don't feel too bad about it, though - especially since seeing Rivers and Tides. Andy Goldsworthy would pile up rocks only to have them topple over time after time. Good thing I stained four pieces of muslin yesterday. Gotta go find my seam rippers to yank all the stitching out of the canvas so I can use it again.

I am currently working on Tulips - my latest mixed media piece.

Finally saw Rivers and Tides - a video about Andy Goldsworthy. His work is based in nature and highly ephemeral, thereby something I can totally relate to. Love that Storm King stone wall and all those curves. Check him out if you get a chance. A quote from the video that I related to was this: "Total control can be the death of a work". I like how one thing leads to the next. It's strange, but this piece that I am working on has been speaking to me in a way. It tells me what it needs to be complete. I know I've heard artists say this sort of stuff before, but when I'm following my instincts and letting serendipity in on the creation process, it just works better. I find that preconceived notions about what the finished piece ought to be get in the way.

10/6/05 Self Portrait of the Day

I wanted to diminish the ominous-looking limb hanging over my head in this image and get a final image that looked a bit more professional and color-balanced. Yeah, I know - here's another picture of me from a low angle. What can I say, it elongates my neck and de-emphasizes that double-chin thing I get when I look down.

Photoshop Diversion

There seems to be a sense of refinery in me lately. It's almost as if I've crossed a threshold of confidence. The progression can be seen in my daily images - especially those over the last week or so. I've started to get to know Photoshop better with this book and some of the PDF tutorials that came with PS-CS. I could spend (and often do) all day on the computer playing with this stuff.

This is a very difficult image to post - especially since I feel the photographs over the last several days have been quite acceptable to me. I was challenged by Little Mick to do something "over the top". Not exactly sure what that means. I don't have any chandeliers in my house, so I can't swing naked from them. Any thoughts?
